Contract fundamentals for non-lawyers
This course provides a practical introduction to how contracts function in real business relationships. It is designed for professionals without a legal background who work with contracts as part of a commercial or operational role, and who need a clearer framework for reading and using contract documents with confidence.
The focus is not on legal theory or clause-by-clause drafting, but on how contracts allocate obligations, risk and consequences in practice. We look at how commercial reality is reflected in contract structure, and what happens when performance deviates from what was agreed.
Participants will develop more practical judgment when working with contracts. This includes identifying uncertainty and risk, understanding when issues deserve closer attention or escalation, and recognising when legal input genuinely adds value. The course treats contracts as working documents, and encourages participants to question unclear or outdated language rather than accept it at face value.

The course covers, among other topics:
- How contracts create obligations and allocate risk in practice
- What changes when contract terms are vague or incomplete
- How commercial reality shapes contract structure and terms, and why this matters in practice
- How to read and work through contracts in a structured way, and where issues typically arise
- How to identify and assess contractual risk in typical business situations
- How breach, remedies and termination can affect performance and cooperation when things do not go as planned
- When legal input materially improves outcomes, and how to use legal support effectively
